Sports Medicine

Houston Healthcare Sports Medicine Program

Houston Healthcare’s Sports Medicine program is designed to support local high school student athletic safety by providing onsite care during practices and sports competitions. Through a partnership with the Houston County Board of Education, Certified Athletic Trainers are stationed at every high school in the county to serve as health care liaisons for student athletes, their coaches, local physicians, and parents.

Athletic trainers work in the schools by attending daily practices, weight training and conditioning sessions, as well as sporting events throughout the school year. They also provide health education to local coaches, athletic directors, students, and parents on a variety of topics including sports safety, preventive and wellness measures, and treatment of minor injuries. In the event of an injury, the athletic trainers serve as health care liaisons between the student athletes and local physicians by coordinating appointments and assisting in the administration of treatment plans.

Houston Healthcare provides Certified Athletic Trainers to the Houston County School System at no cost. Our five full-time trainers serve Houston County, Northside, Perry, Veterans, and Warner Robins High Schools. Each trainer is a resource for the student athletes at their designated schools.

Houston Healthcare’s athletic trainers are certified through the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and are licensed athletic trainers in the state of Georgia.

Annual Spring Physicals

Every child that plays sports at the middle or high school level in the Houston County School District is required to have a physical completed before they can participate in any school sport. Houston Healthcare coordinates the annual Spring Sports Physicals for the middle and high schools for the school district. The physicals are conducted by the athletic trainers and Houston Healthcare Resident Physicians along with local physicians and their staff. More than 2,000 students participate in the annual sports physicals.
